Quando a metà degli anni ’70 John Eliot Gardiner convertì la sua Monteverdi Orchestra all’utilizzo di strumenti originali e la ribattezzò English Baroque Soloists, impegnò i suoi magnifici strumentisti, il coro e una miriade di solisti di prim’ordine nell’esecuzione e registrazione delle più emblematiche opere di Henry Purcell.
L’accoglienza di pubblico e critica fu unanimemente entusiasta portando la rivista Diapason a dire: “La lettura di Purcell fatta da Gardiner, drammatica, iper-raffinata, a volte ardente, travolgente, sempre incantevole, non può mancare nella collezione di dischi dei più illuminati appassionati di musica classica!”

Compositore inglese. Figlio di un musicista, fu dapprima cantore nella cappella reale. Nel 1673, quando mutò la voce, divenne aiutante del custode degli strumenti di Carlo ii. Nel 1677 fu nominato compositore per i «violini del re», nel 1679 organista dell'abbazia di Westminster, nel 1682 fra gli organisti della cappella reale. La sua prima opera pubblicata fu una serie di sonate a tre (Sonatas of three parts, 1683). I suoi incarichi ufficiali continuarono sotto Giacomo ii e Guglielmo iii. Fu sepolto nell'abbazia di Westminster. La musica teatrale. P. incominciò a scrivere musiche di scena nel 1680, ma la maggior parte della sua musica per il teatro fu composta negli ultimi anni della sua vita, dal 1690. Direttore d'orchestra inglese. Allievo di Th. Dart a Londra e di N. Boulanger a Parigi, ha fondato nel 1964 a Cambridge il Monteverdi Choir, specializzato nell'esecuzione di musiche da Monteverdi a Händel, a cui ha affiancato nel 1968 la Monteverdi Orchestra. Nello stesso tempo si è affermato come un'autorità nella riscoperta del teatro operistico dei secc. xvii e xviii con realizzazioni in scena e in disco di opere di M.A. Charpentier, Händel, Rameau, Gluck. Nel 1989 e nel '90 ha iniziato l'incisione discografica rispettivamente di un ciclo di opere di Mozart e di Gluck con strumenti d'epoca.
