Un studio monumentale sull'alchimia di Newton che esamina in dettaglio il contenuto del suoi principali manoscritti alchemici. Newman ricostruisce sistematicamente tutto il percorso interpretativo che Newton ha compiuto sugli autori classici dell'alchimia (Filalete e Flamel in particolare), descrivendoci in dettaglio i suoi esperimenti volti principalmente ad ottenere il famoso dissolvente o Mercurio dei Saggi (il caduceo di Mercurio). Con sorpresa, scopriamo anche che Newton esprimeva forti dubbi sull'interpretazione standard dell'Introitus di Filalete (via dell'amalgama che parte dal regolo marziale di antimonio), propendendo invece per una via che parte dai vetrioli di marte e di venere. Un testo fondamentale insieme al classico studio di Newman sull'alchimia di George Starkey alias Ireneo Filalete: "Gehennical Fire".
