To move beyond the level of beginners' Japanese, it is necessary to master new vocabulary, kanji and expressions, as well as grammatical structures and communication strategies, and to practice each of these in their various usages. This can only be achieved through a systematic approach that builds on each aspect of the language in an organic way and respectively links them to the language as a whole. This intermediate Japanese textbook has been designed to meet these needs. The scope and order of the contents enables Japanese language learners to take the leap from the beginners' level to the intermediate level with general competence in the language in its many manifestations. Equal emphasis has been placed on the four functions of listening, speaking, reading and writing, through natural examples of the language incorporated in the kaiwa (conversation) and yomimono (reader) sections of each chapter. The latter half of the text is a collection of real-life material. Comprehensive explanations of grammar and expressions are provided in the Grammar notes section. In addition, the Practice section enables students to familiarize themselves with functional expressions for purposes such as making requests, obtaining permission and extending invitations. The main texts and the Culture Notes and Speed Reading sections are packed with information on contemporary Japanese customs, culture and social phenomena. In this way they constitute an incisive guide to Japanese society.
