Hector Berlioz, compositore romantico francese (Côte-St.-André 1803 - Parigi 1869), abbandonò gli studi in medicina per dedicarsi alla musica, entrando nel 1826 al conservatorio. Compose le Otto scene del Faust e la Sinfonia fantastica nel 1829, e l'anno seguente vinse il Prix de Rome. Nel 1833 sposò l'attrice Harriet Smithson, con la quale ebbe un figlio, Luigi, ma lasciò poi entrambi per la cantante Maria Recio. Lavorò come critico musicale per l'Europe littéraire, la Gazette musicale, il Journal des Débats. Scrisse un Trattato di strumentazione e le sue Memorie.Delle sue opere musicali si ricordano: Requiem (su commissione del ministro dell'Interno), il Cellini, Harold, Roméo...
