Nome d'arte di J. Cecil Pringle, attore e regista statunitense. Figlio d'arte, esordisce nel 1916 come comprimario per gli Ince Studios e poi, in ruoli sempre più centrali, spesso di villain, attraversa una cinquantina di film e giunge all'unica, tormentosa regia della sua carriera, Love's Penalty (Pegno d'amore, 1921). Nel breve passaggio alla Fox vede accrescere la propria fama virando verso ruoli di protagonista positivo, ma è I. Thalberg a intuirne le potenzialità e a metterlo sotto contratto per la mgm, affidandogli un ruolo centrale in La sua ora (1924) di K. Vidor. Imposto dallo stesso Thalberg in La vedova allegra (1925) di E. von Stro­heim, contribuisce in modo sensibile al successo del film. K. Vidor ne esalta le capacità drammatiche, unite all'ironia e a un'aristocratica prestanza...
