Perdido Street Station

I wish I had China Miéville's ability to play with words to write how amazing this novel is. The very first pages, describing a sexual intercourse between a man and a bug-like girl are like a punch in the face that immediately drags you into this stunning world. Miéville's descriptions are a work of art, the story branches in an intricate and brilliant way, taking us in front of creatures of absurd logic and characters with a real human - or beast like - psychology. Perdido Street Station is so well written that it seems like a reportage, a "simple" description of a world that already exists, and it does: China Miéville thought it, and gave it to us in such a rich choreography of sounds and smells that one will immediately live inside of it. The style is mad, dreamlike. The structure of the world is so deeply studied that, as I said, makes one think it's a reportage. Every word is nestled in the most precise way. Every character, even the least useful one, has a mind of their own. I find sad that so few people know and appreciate this writer, but his style and genre aren't for the everyday reader, and not even for an everyday sci-fi reader. China Miéville is a genius, a master of the weird-fiction, a choreographer of words that has nothing to envy to the fathers of sci-fi. Frank Herbert would've loved this, Isaac Asimov would've loved this, Philip Dick would've loved this. Will you? I definitely hope so.
