With the success of the first two singles, Green Lights & Blue Skies (feat. Jason Mraz) and Right Now Not Tomorrow (feat. Jason Mraz) , surpassing 500K streams on Spotify, Gregory Page releases his new album, One Hell Of A Memory (out November 13, 2020).
This positively charged album (featuring his good friend Jason Mraz on several tracks) imparts a message of optimism and urgency, complete with catchy melodies, beautiful harmonies and an array of special arrangements performed on Banjo, Fiddle, Mandolin and Irish Uilleann pipes by the likes of Dennis Caplinger (Eric Clapton, JJ Cale and The Simpsons ) and Eric Rigler (Braveheart, The Titanic, Outlander ). While the sounds are reminiscent of yesteryear, the lyrics get us on our feet and dancing toward a brighter tomorrow. Page’s wordplay and compositions weave tradition with change, blending yesterday with the future and delivering us an uplifting album with all the feels, right now.
The songs on One Hell Of A Memory were written during an extremely difficult period in Page’s life. “I found myself at odds with a powerful person in the music industry, fighting for the right to own and control my music. Although I understood it was incredibly risky taking this person to court, I felt it was the only way I was going to be able to hold onto my music, my integrity and my very soul. Also, I thought, if I could stop him now, then maybe I could help other artists that might be taken advantage of by him or those like him and stop this cycle of theft and greed.”
Page had many close friends that stood by him and came to his aid including an exceptional lawyer that helped him navigate the rough legal waters during the fight for his ability to continue to write music, the creative endeavour he has done for most of his adult life. “It was one of the darkest moments of my life. But, against all odds, with the support and love of so many by my side, I ended up prevailing. At the end of it all, I felt a tremendous sense of relief, as well as gratitude for a win that was not just my own, but for all artists who are fighting to protect their musical legacies.”
From this dark time, Page realized that it is the most challenging experience that people truly discover who they are, what they can endure, how much strength they have (even if they didn’t realize it at the time) and who is in their corner.
A couple of the songs on this album, Change in the Weather and The Promise, specifically encapsulate this personal journey including the tumultuousness, the challenge, the pain and the transformation and eventual redemption.
The second single, Right Now Not Tomorrow, finds Jason Mraz joining Page, their voices perfectly in sync as they sing this upbeat and optimistic tune about not wasting another moment in pursuit of happiness and fulfillment in life. It’s truly the most important lesson for Page and one he hopes to inspire the rest of the world to take and use, especially in these challenging times.
Finally, the lead single, Green Lights & Blue Skies, reveals the sight of pure and unadulterated hope, shooting straight up to the sun, after all the clouds have blown away. It captures the feelings Page had at the end of this ordeal. “Looking back now, I can see that this past year has truly been one hell of a memory.”
Born in London, England, and now calling California home, singer-songwriter Gregory Page has a prolific and influential music career spanning folk, indie rock, country, blues and jazz. After an exciting run as an original member of The Rugburns , Page turned his focus to his singer-songwriter aspirations making over a dozen full length studio albums. Page has been performing on stages around the world for decades and his music has been featured on the BBC, NPR, and film and television soundtracks, including Ray Donovan and Better Things. Page has also worked with and opened for an array of legendary and iconic singer songwriters including Jason Mraz, John Prine, Bob Dylan, John Doe, Jewel, John C. Reilly, Chris Thile, Judy Collins, Steve Poltz, Tom Brosseau and A.J. Croce.
