The only single authored book that guides the student through first principles and the myriad of overlapping and competing approaches to environmental governance. Considers governance in a broad sense including how the environment is controlled manipulated, regulated and contested by a range of actors and institutions Conceptual material will be illustrated using case studies of real world issues and applied policy examples to show how theoretical perspectives can reveal previously hidden problems and solutions. Critical and interdisciplinary the book will enable students to recognize the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches to environmental governance The Covid-19 pandemic is engaged with in the opening section to recognise the potential for financial stimulus that it affords, and to evidence international collective action that addresses a global crisis. Across all of the chapters, discussions that refer to climate change summits will be updated so that they engage with the most recent developments.. Key examples are where technologies have advanced over the past decade, for example with electric vehicles, or where a project has been withdrawn, for example the Desertec Foundation’s project in the Sahara. The second edition will replace or update figures and case studies throughout the book, and leaves the order of the book intact. Two of the key debates which are no longer relevant will be removed. The first edition’s illustrations will be updated, Since the first edition, there is an increased sense of urgency from NGO’s and social movements on addressing climate change, which I recognise and use to expand Chapter 10 on participation and politics, with examples drawn from the climate strikes, extinction rebellion and the anti-fracking movement.
