There were two publications that Amici expressed regret about not having been able to complete during his lifetime due to other more urgent occupations: the memoir on his achromatic microscopes and the catalogue of double stars. Alberto Meschiari filled the first of these gaps in Amici’s work in 2003 with the volume entitled The microscopes of Giovanni Battista Amici. He is now filling the second gap with this printed catalogue. Why decide to publish Giovanni Battista Amici’s Catalogue of double stars today, almost two centuries after the manuscript was written? In his day, John Frederick William Herschel returned repeatedly to the subject, urging Amici to prepare a Communication for submission to the Astronomical Society. On 7 September 1877, the superintendent of the Markree Observatory, William Doberck, who spent nine years there observing above all double star systems with the restored large 13-inch refractor, sent a short paper entitled On Cooper and Amici’s Double-Star-Measures to the “Astronomische Nachrichten”, in which he wrote: «It is greatly to be regretted that Amici’s measures of the distances between double stars have not been published yet. Any measures made so long ago are of importance». Photographic reproduction of the original manuscript drawn up by Giovanni Battista Amici (1786-1863), optical instrument maker, astronomer, naturalist, between 1815 and 1851. With an introduction in Italian and in English.
